When patching your database schema between application versions, you cannot execute a DROP statement. This is a known issue and has been fixed as of platform release 3.1.4 - see http://docs.apprenda.com/release-notes/3-1-4.
The Apprenda Express stand-alone installer is always updated to the latest release of the platform; however, the virtual machine images for VMWare and Hyper-V will not be updated until release 3.5, so they include this known issue.
